Dr. Yong Shi Awarded NSF Grant For Project "MEMS Umbrella-Shaped Actuator With Medical Apps Potential"
Dr. Yong Shi of Stevens Institute of Technology was recently awarded a NSF subsidisation for his project coroneted "MEMS Umbrella-Shaped Actuator with Active Structure for Medical Applications." The grant was approved on scientific/technical virtue for trey years and will number approximately $300,000. The objective of the research is to design, cook up and test an umbrella-shaped micro-actuator based on an integrated micro/nanofabrication technique for thrombus retrieval in stroke therapy.
The proposed actuator consists of active structures that are precisely controlled by novel piezoelectric nanofibers. The functional precept of the proposed actuator is singular in that it hindquarters provide a dynamic shear force on blood clots in vascular arteries. This shear military unit can be fine-tuned to facilitate the separation of the blood clot from the wall of the vascular artery due to the shearing-thinning phenomenon, so enabling finish retrieval while minimizing the risk of damage to the arteries. This research will contribute newfangled fundamental knowledge in the areas of piezoelectric answer of nanomaterials as well as the mechanical behaviour of blood clots.
Dr. Shi, the Principal Investigator, has been an assistant prof in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stevens Institute of Technology since 2004. He obtained his M.S and Ph.D in 2001 and 2004 respectively from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests admit functional nanofibers and nanocomposites, micro/nano actuators and sensors, RF, Bio, medical MEMS/NEMS systems design, modeling and fabrication . He won the ASNT society from the American Society of Nondestructive Testing in 2007 for the development of a nano acoustic sensor. Shi is likewise a member of several scientific and professional societies, including IEEE, MRS, ASME, and Sigma Xi.
Co-PIs working with Professor Shi on the picture are Professor Sundeep Mangla (M. D., Director of Interventional Neuroradiology , Associate Professor of Radiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology ) and Professor Ming Zhang (M.D, Assistant Professor, Dept of Anesthesiology), both from SUNY Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn, New York.

Ironically enough though, their constitute came from the street term for Quaaludes. The grouping went through various members in their time together, simply the band's "determinate" card was the squad of singer Anthony Civocelli, bassist Arthur Smilios, drummer Luke Abbey, and guitarists Walter Schreifels and (at last) Alex Brown; John "Porcell" Porcelly (guitar) and Sammy Siegler (drums) likewise served in the Biscuits' ranks. No last name career were used on whatever of their recordings; in fact, Civocelli went by the nominate "Civ" at the clock time. They were selfsame extreme right-winger, trying to move the motion aside from the warring rules that many hardcore straightedge fans had created around their pet bands. The independent goal was to taste and include anyone wHO treasured to take on their political views without torment around the esthetics, something that made them unpopular with many in the movement. They managed to tour the U.S. at one time and Europe doubly, and release deuce albums on Revelation Records (a 1988 self-titled 7" and 1989's highly influential Commence Today) ahead Schreifels left the group to form the melodic hardcore/metal lot Quicksand in 1990. Gorilla Biscuits were officially broken up, playing a terminal gig together in 1992, only in realness the left over members turned around and formed CIV, a pop-punk malarky band that scored a minor hit with "Can't Wait One Minute More" when they reappeared on a major mark in 1994. Gorilla Biscuits reunited in 2005 during the Save CBGB's campaign (when the illustrious venue was on the brink of closure), which finally lED to the band embarking on a subsequent nationwide tour of duty. |

Pelvic Prolapse: What Does The Urologist Contribute?
The role of the evaluation is to diagnose the extent of the problem and to implement management. During the history symptoms pertaining to prolapse should be sought. An assessment of disoblige should be elicited and a discussion should be had as to the treatment expectations. A variety of status specific questionnaires are useable to care in quantifying symptoms and to assess quality of life and bother. A pelvic exam is performed to assess the health of the vaginal mucosa and to assess and grade whatever prolapse. A stress test is performed to assess for focus incontinence. The muscular integrity of the pelvic floor and the external anal sphincter should also be assessed. A post void residual is checked. Further evaluation with imaging and or urodynamics is performed on a case by case groundwork. Once the diagnosis of prolapse is made then a determination regarding treatment should be made. Conservative treatment with pelvic muscle exercises or a contraceptive diaphragm may do. If surgical treatment is to performed the approach should be based on the patient's problems and her expectations for convalescence and enduringness.
The most common complications of prolapsus surgery that the urologist will deal with are; persistent or de novo incontinence, new onset of recurrent infections, hematuria, hurting and obstruction. Incontinence should be worked up with a history and physical and urodynamics. If there is whatever concern for foreign material in the bladder or urethra a cystoscopy should be performed. Cystoscopy should also be performed in the pillowcase of dogged infections or hematuria. Urodynamics may be helpful to diagnose obstruction but it is sane to take down a sling or anterior repair without urodynamic proof of obstruction if there is a clear temporal relationship between the surgery and the oncoming of impediment.
Mesh used in descensus repairs should be remote in the case of pain, contagion or misplacement. Mesh in the bladder can be removed endoscopically, laparoscopically or with an open proficiency. Mesh extrusion can be treated with partial removal and dither closure over the defect. When perennial incontinence or prolapse occurs following a mesh fix one can consider placing additional mesh but if one procedure has failed it is reasonable to consider a different approaching on a second repair. In drumhead the urologist who deals with dissoluteness must value the patient for prolapsus and care for or bring up those patients who indigence surgical intervention. Urologists will also be asked to evaluate patients with complications following descensus surgery as many of these patients may ask a cystoscopy and or urodynamic testing. Treatment of complications next prolapse surgical procedure will reckon on the nature of the knottiness.

Jay-Z wows Glastonbury Festival (+pics)
The controversial choice of American rapper Jay-Z to headline Glastonbury proved to be a masterstroke by the event's organiser Michael Eavis as the hip-hop star wowed the music festival.
Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher had called hip-hop at Glastonbury "wrong" and traditionalists in Internet chatrooms had said they would have preferred a band like Radiohead, while critics also blamed the
rapper for slow ticket sales.
In a nod to Gallagher, Grammy Award-winner Jay-Z - married to singer Beyonce - took to the stage to the strains of the Mancunian band's hit Wonderwall, before running through a repertoire of his own hits, including Hard Knock Life.
"They say you don't want me here, Glastonbury," queried the rapper. "Now tell me, where is the love?"
That question was answered by huge cheers from the crowd, whose only disappointment was that Beyonce did not make an appearance.
"That was a real triumph to bring hip-hop from the streets of New York to Glastonbury," Eavis told the BBC.
"All that doom and gloom about ticket sales, but we were completely sold out by Thursday and it we had such a younger audience."
Prior to Jay-Z's appearance, soul singer Amy Winehouse played an hour-long set after receiving treatment for a lung condition which her father said was caused by smoking crack cocaine.
"It was such a huge crowd watching her and I think she became a superstar last night," added Eavis, who said that Winehouse had asked him to let her headline the Festival next year.
By Saturday, Somerset and Avon police said there had been 379 reported crime incidents, including drug offences, compared to 168 at the same stage last year.
The vast majority of non-drug related crime were reports of thefts from tents which now stand at 203.

Neo-honky tonker John Anderson was born in Apopka, FL, in 1955 and grew up hearing to rock candy & stray, until he observed country euphony at age 15 through Merle Haggard. He affected to Nashville in the early '70s, viewing up at his sister's house with no warning, and worked a variety of singular jobs (including one as a roofer for the Grand Ole Opry) piece playing clubs at night. Eventually, all the difficult put to work paying off with a undertake for Warner Bros., and Anderson released his first-class honours degree individual in 1978. His self-titled debut album appeared in 1980 and helped signal the climb of the new diehard movement, drawing critical praise as well. Soon the hits started to pile up: "1959" and "Volaille Truck" became his first-class honours degree res publica Top Tens in 1981, and "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (Merely I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)" went Top Five later that yr. 1982's "Hazardous and Blue" was Anderson's first-class honours degree chart-topper, and he duplicated that exploit doubly in 1983 with "Sinister Sheep" and the million-selling "Swingin'," the latter of which was the biggest-selling res publica single in Warner Bros. history. Anderson returned to the Top Ten several times over the succeeding few years, to the highest degree notably with 1984's "She Sure Got Away with My Heart," merely by 1987 his commercial momentum had stalled, and he and Warner parted slipway.Anderson continued to record steady and mounted a major return in the early '90s, starting with 1992's Seminole Wind. Its statute title course went to number two, and the followup, "Straight Tequila Night," went all the way to number one; "When It Comes to You" besides made the Top Five. Anderson scored some other number one in 1993 with "Money in the Bank" and hit the Top Five triplet times over 1994-1995 with "I Wish I Could Have Been There," "I've Got It Made," and "Bend Until It Breaks." Though he hasn't been endorse since, Anderson's albums and singles go along to hold the lower reaches of the country charts -- grounds of a still-solid fan basis. In the perfect world, Michael Monroe would make been one of the starring frontmen of the ‘80s glam metal motility -- going away most of his unendurable coevals in the sprinkle. Born Matti Fagerholm on June 17, 1960, in Helsinki, Finland, Monroe played sax with a miscellany of Finnish bands end-to-end the late ‘70s, before eventually switch to vocals, and serving co-form Hanoi Rocks in 1980. Preceding Motley Crue by several geezerhood, Hanoi Rocks was one of the first base groups in several age to sweep up the ‘glam' look (something that would get threadbare on L.A.'s Sunset Strip in only a few eld) -- profound on the make up and tomentum spray, flashy outfits, etc. -- merely unlike their future young, Hanoi Rocks' roots wasn't in heavy metal, but preferably toughie and garage rock (the Stooges, early Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Dead Boys).
Later on some line up tweaking, the ‘classic' Hanoi Rocks line of work up was place in topographic point, consisting of Monroe, guitarists Andy McCoy and Nasty Suicide, bassist Sam Yaffa, and drummer Nicholas ‘Razzle' Dingley. On the speciality of several Euro-only, indie releases (1981's Bangkok Shocks, 1982's Self Destruction Blues and Oriental Beat, plus 1983's Back to Mystery City), and European tours (as well as visits to such exotic locales as Israel and Japan), a seethe began to build. Hanoi Rocks was signed to Columbia Records shortly after, as U.S. success appeared to be just around the recession - specially afterwards the firing of 1984's Two Steps from the Move. Then came a much-publicized automobile fortuity that killed Dingley (behind the steering wheel was an inebriated Vince Neil) in December of 1984. Despite Monroe and ship's company attempting to carry on with replacements, the promising Hanoi was laid to rest later the side by side year.
Relocating to New York City, Monroe began to pick up the pieces and embarked on a solo vocation. Monroe's first solo discharge was 1987's Nights Are So Long (a Scandinavia/Japan only release), which was quite an Dead Boys-influenced (Monroe had befriended Stiv Bators and covered one of his solo songs, while guitar player Jimmy Zero contributed a partner off of songs). An appearance in the star-studded Sun City video recording followed, as did a world solo trade with Polygram Records. An initial plan of reissuing Nights failed to pan kO'd, resulting in 1989's Not Fakin' It organism the number one domestically issued solo Monroe liberation. The album would go on to become Monroe's most successful stateside discharge (the merely one and only to appear on the Billboard charts), spell all of Hanoi Rocks' albums were reissued on Guns N' Roses' ephemeral Uzi Suicide label (James Monroe besides appeared on G n' R's Use Your Illusion releases and The Spaghetti Incident).
Many assumed that Monroe would find ever-elusive breakthrough success this moment time about, just erstwhile more, it was not to be. A aforethought collaborationism with ex-Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens failed to pan kO'd, as it appeared that Monroe completely disappeared. This proved not to be the lawsuit, as he continued to emergence lower-profile solo releases (1992's Jerusalem Slim, 1996's Peace of Mind, 1999's Life Gets You Dirty, 2002's Take Them and Break Them, and 2003's Whatcha Want. Monroe has also sporadically reunited with his ex-Hanoi bandmates, including Yaffa under the name Demolition 23 (1995's Demolition 23), and with McCoy as Hanoi Rocks, resulting in the 2002 liberation, Twelve Shots on the Rocks.

Amy Winehouse - Winehouse Turns Down Book Deal
Troubled singer AMY WINEHOUSE has reportedly turned down a lucrative book deal - because she feels she is too young to write her life story.
The Back To Black hitmaker has struggled with a variety of personal problems throughout her career, including drug and alcohol addiction and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil being incarcerated on charges of assault and perverting the course of justice.
But the 24-year-old star is adamant that she won't be documenting her troubles any time soon - and the lure of a multi-million dollar fee will not change her mind.
A source tells British newspaper the Daily Star, "Amy's been battling off book deals for over a year, but the latest offer would have earned her millions.
"But she thought the idea was ludicrous and turned it down outright. Firstly, she feels she's far too young at 24 and secondly, when she does get round to publishing her life story, she wants to write it herself. She doesn't need a ghost writer."

Few celebrity siblings lavatory emerge from the shadows of their already famous relations to become superstars in their have correct and with their possess distinct personalities. That's precisely what Janet Jackson did in decorous one of the biggest female pop and R&B stars of the '80s and '90s. Since her breakthrough in 1986 with the album Control, Jackson's calling as a hitmaker has been a model of consistency, rivaling Madonna and Whitney Houston in footing of pop up chart success over the long draw. A great function of the reason was that Jackson unbroken her level of tone control very high; her singles were always expertly crafted, with indelible pop hooks and state of the art product that kept up with contemporaneous trends in urban R&B. Once established, her broad-based attract never really swaybacked all that much; she was able to head off significant career missteps, musical and other than, and successfully shifted her figure of speech from a strong, independent young woman to a aphrodisiac, grow grownup. With a string of multi-platinum albums under her whack, she showed no signs of slowing down in the new millennium.
Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born May 16, 1966, in Gary, IN. She was the youngest of baseball club children in the Jackson kinsperson, and her old brothers had already begun performing unitedly as the Jackson 5 by the metre she was born. Bitten by the acting bug at a edward Young age, she first-class honours degree appeared onstage with the Jackson 5 at age seven-spot, and began a sitcom performing career at the age of x in 1977, when manufacturer Norman Lear selected her to join the cast of Unspoiled Times. She remained thither until 1979, and subsequently appeared on Diff'rent Strokes (1981-1982) and A New Kind of Family. In 1982, pushed by her father into stressful a vocalizing career, Jackson released her self-titled first album on A&M; a twosome of singles scraped the lour reaches of the charts, simply on the solid, it made very small noise. She was vomit in the melodious series Fame in 1983; the next yr, she issued her irregular album, Dream Street, which sold even more than under the weather than its herald. Upon turning 18, Jackson rebelled against her parents' close superintendence, eloping with a member of another musical home, isaac Merrit Singer James DeBarge. However, the relationship speedily make the rocks and Jackson wounding up moving back into her parents' domicile and having the marriage annulled.
Jackson took some clock time to second thought her musical career, and her father hired her a young manager, John McClain, wHO isolated his youth charge to train her as a terpsichorean (and make her lose weightiness). McClain hooked Jackson up with producers/writers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, whom she'd seen perform as members of the Minneapolis funk outfit the Time. Jackson collaborated with Jam and Lewis on nigh of the tracks for her following record album, Mastery, which presented her as a confident, tough-minded lester Willis Young woman (with a easygoing face and a sense of humor) pickings charge of her living for the get-go meter. In financial backing of Jackson's new persona, Jam and Lewis crafted a set up of dressed, computerized support tracks with slamming beatniks that owed more to heavy, hip-hop-tinged funk and urban R&B than Janet's older brother Michael's music. Control became an out-of-the-box make, and finally spun off sestet singles, the first five of which -- "What Have You Done for Me Lately," the take in phrase-inspiring "Filthy," the number one "When I Think of You," the form of address rails, and the lay "Let's Wait Awhile" -- hit the Top Five on the pop charts. Jackson was hailed as a role model for youth women and Mastery eventually sold all over pentad 1000000 copies, establishing Jackson as non just a star, simply her own woman. It as well made Jam and Lewis a monstrously in demand production team.
For the hotly hoped-for follow-up, McClain precious to labour Jackson toward more overtly sexual territory, to which she objected strenuously. Instead, she began collaborating with Jam and Lewis on more socially conscious material, which formed the backbone of 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814 (the "1814" purportedly stood for either the letters "R" and "N" or the year "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written). Actually, keep for the claim caterpillar tread, most of the record's singles were bright and romantically themed; four of them -- "Miss You Much," "Risky venture," "Blackened Cat," and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" -- polish off number one, and three more -- "Speech rhythm Nation," "All right," and "Come Back to Me" -- reached the Top Five, devising Jackson the first creative person ever to bring forth seven Top Five hits off of nonpareil album (something non fifty-fifty her comrade Michael had accomplished). Aside from a greater enjoyment of outside samples, Regular recurrence Nation's sound mostly resembled that of Ascendence, just was precisely as well crafted, and listeners embraced it sky-high, purchasing over captain Hicks meg copies. Jackson undertook her first real tour (she'd appeared at high schools around the rural area in 1982) in support of the album and it was predictably a shattering success. In 1991, Jackson capitalized on her success by jumping from A&M to Virgin for a reported $32 1000000, and besides secretly marital choreographer and longtime fellow René Elizondo.
Once on Virgin, Jackson specify almost revamping her good and image. Her 1992 duo with Luther Vandross from the Mo' Money soundtrack, "The Best Things in Life Are Free," was a major R&B polish off, likewise stretch the pop Top Ten. The following twelvemonth, she besides resumed her playing life history, co-starring in acclaimed director (and former jr high classmate) John Singleton's Poetic Justice, along with rapper Tupac Shakur. But neither genuinely hinted at the sexy, seductive, fully adult persona she unveiled with 1993's janet., her Virgin debut. Jackson trumpeted her new image with a notorious Rolling Stone cover picture, in which her topless configuration was covered by a geminate of workforce belonging to an spiritual world "admirer." Musically, Jam and Lewis specify aside the synthesized funk of their first two albums with Jackson in favor of warm, inviting, mildly undulating grooves. The album's lead undivided, the slinky "That's the Way Love Goes," became Jackson's biggest polish off ever so, spending eight weeks at number unitary. It was followed by a predictably long parade of Top Ten hits -- "If," the number nonpareil ballad "Once again," "Because of You," "Any Time, Any Place," "You Want This." janet.'s debut showing at issue 1 made it her third straight chart-topping album, and it went on to sell nigh vII one thousand thousand copies.
In 1995, Janet and Michael teamed up for the unmarried "Wow," which was supported by an work out, award-winning, space age tV that, upon culmination, graded as the to the highest degree expensive music video ever made. The unmarried debuted at number pentad on the pop charts, merely bit by bit slid down from at that place. In 1996, A&M issued a retrospective of her years at the mark, Designing of a Decade 1986-1996; it featured the Virgin polish off "That's the Way Love Goes" and a few new tracks, one of which, "Fugitive," became a Top Five polish off. Jackson also signed a new contract with Virgin for a reported $80 meg. Yet patch working on her following album, Jackson reportedly suffered an emotional breakdown, or at least a severe bout with depressive disorder; she later on elevated eyebrows when she talked in several interviews around the cleansing value of chocolate enemas as theatrical role of her treatment. Her next record album, The Velvet Rope, appeared in 1997 and was touted as her most personal and intimate work to escort. The Velvet Rope sought-after to combine the sensualness of janet. with the more socially conscious parts of Musical rhythm Nation, commixture songs just about issues like domestic pervert, AIDS, and homophobia with her to the highest degree sexually explicit songs ever so. Critical view on the record album was divided; some applauded her ambitiousness, patch others establish the record too bloated. The lead American single "Together Again," an lament for AIDS victims, was a number ane hit; besides popular on the wireless was "Got 'til It's Gone," which featured rapper Q-Tip and a sample of Joni Mitchell over a reggae beat. "I Get Lonely," featuring Blackstreet, was some other big hit; merely on the whole, The Velvet Rope didn't prove to be the blockbuster singles gravy that its predecessors were, which was believably wherefore its gross sales stalled at around three 1000000 copies.
Thomas J. Jackson toured the world over again, and stayed on the charts in 1999 with the Top Five Busta Rhymes duet "What's It Gonna Be?!"; her appearance in the video remade her as a glitzy, unnaturally costumed, single-name diva. In 2000, she appeared in the Eddie Murphy funniness Nutlike Professor II: The Klumps, and her soundtrack donation, "Doesn't Really Matter," became a number ane single. Unfortunately, Jackson's married couple to Elizondo had turn constrained and the couple divorced in 2000, sparking a courtroom battle over her musical income. Jackson returned with a new record album, All for You, in 2001, which largely continued the sensual tone of janet. and The Velvet Rope; it debuted at number ane, merchandising over 600,000 copies in its first week alone. The title track was issued as the album's first base single and quickly topped the charts, followed by another sizeable hit in "Individual to Call My Lover."
Patch Jackson played out a great deal of 2001 and 2002 on the road supporting All for You, she also launch sentence for some guest appearances, most notably with Beenie Man on his Tropical Storm LP and Justin Timberlake on Justified. By 2003 she was back in the studio, working once once again with Jam and Lewis on tracks for a new record album; extra producers included Dallas Austin and Kanye West. Later that year, it was revealed Jackson would subscribe to role in an MTV-produced extravaganza during halftime at the Super Bowl. 2004 began with an Internet news leak of the upbeat Austin production "Simply a Little While." The singer's camp rolled with the punches, oblation the course to wireless as an authorised digital download, simply the bombinate this business caused was minuscule in comparison to the nightmare union of disembarrass exposure and bad publicity that Jackson's next hazard caused. Appearing at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVIII as scheduled, Jackson performed "All for You" and "Rhythm Nation" in front bringing kO'd surprise guest Timberlake for a duet on his strike "Rock Your Body." But the real surprise came at song's end, when a motion from Timberlake caused Jackson's costume to shoot, exposing her correct, punctured boob on unrecorded television to hundreds of millions of viewers.
The incident caused furious backpedaling and apologizing from Timberlake, Jackson, the NFL, CBS, and MTV, which swore no previous knowledge of the alleged "wardrobe malfunction," and light-emitting diode to speculation over how Damita Jo -- Jackson's approaching album and her first in trey long time -- would be standard. But while the argument gave Jackson both heartbreak and a bit of dislodge advertising, it was too the impetus for a national consider on public impropriety. A federal commission was set up to investigate lubricity, the FCC enacted tougher crackdowns on TV and radio programs broadcast medium questionable content, and dead everyone from pundits to politicians to the man in the street had an judgment on Janet Jackson's pectus. Later that March, the singer softly started devising the talk show rounds. She was still apologizing for the incident, but she was too promoting Damita Jo, which Virgin issued at the end of the calendar month. Largely considered a disappointment, the album still sold over deuce jillion copies oecumenical and earned three Grammy nominations. 20 Y.O. followed two age subsequently, and though it was reviewed more than favorably than Damita Jo, it was off the Billboard cc album chart after 15 weeks. Jermaine Dupri, Jackson's dear sake and the executive producer of the record album, was so perturbation over Virgin's want of support that he left his post as prexy of Virgin's urban division.

The seeds of Pacific Gas & Electric were sown in Los Angeles endorse in 1966 when self-taught guitar player Tom Marshall formed Bluesberry Jam, whose ranks included drummer Charlie Allen. Allen turned out to be such a fine vocalist that he all over up comme il faut the frontman; his barrel chair was filled by Adolfo de la Parra in 1968. The Purse Forum: uniting online to spot fake purses
NEW YORK — It was the peeling hologram sticker in her new Fendi bag that made Chrys Reyna suspicious.
She wasn't able to afford the black leather bag's $1,100 retail price, so when she bought it on eBay for $415, she considered it a triumph in bargain shopping. It was only through a Web site designed to spot counterfeits that she realized she'd bought "a really high-quality five-star fake."
In an increasingly troubled economy, shoppers who used to be able to afford luxury goods are turning to third-party retailers that promise big discounts. But these amazing savings aren't always the real deal, and some consumers are using the Internet to police them.
Counterfeit products have cost the U.S. economy between $200 billion and $250 billion each year, according to recent estimates from the Department of Homeland Security's immigration and customs enforcement branch.
Major online auction sites such as eBay say they police their listings, but with millions of new auctions added each day, many buyers unknowingly spend hundreds on shoddy replicas.
"There's no way we can have an authentication service for every category," eBay spokeswoman Nichola Sharpe said.
That's where The Purse Forum (forum.purseblog.com), a popular online message board, wants to lend a hand. An offshoot of The Purse Blog, a handbag enthusiast site with the motto "Shallow Obsessing Strongly Encouraged," the board encourages buyers to post photos of purchases they'd like to make.
"We realized early on that there was a lot of counterfeiting going around the eBay marketplace" and other online merchants, said Vlad Dusil, the blog's 28-year-old co-founder. His site lets shoppers post the photos for critiques by other Forum members who may be more knowledgeable about a specific bag.
It was through The Purse Forum that Reyna found the truth about her Fendi bag. She reported the fraud to eBay after she and her fake Fendi seller were unable to settle independently, but the auction site was unable to recover Reyna's money. EBay has refused to comment on Reyna's claim, citing privacy agreements.
Reyna now suspects that her other eBay-purchased designer bags are also knockoffs. Altogether, she has spent $1,000.
"In a way, they're the experts of those bags," she said, describing the members of the discussion board as "a community that just really loves bags."
Becoming a bag connoisseur takes work, and in some cases, a lot of cash. Rebecca Vanard, 22, is one of seven unpaid moderators for the Louis Vuitton discussions. She uses her own collection of 52 Louis Vuitton bags as references. Vanard began studying the brand's bags in late 2004, when she noticed an increasing presence of the brand's Multicolore bags.
"I wondered, 'How come so many people had them when they were such expensive bags?' " she said.
Louis Vuitton bags are the most researched items on the forum, according to Dusil, who said he created the forum as a favor to his bag-loving fiancée and co-founder, Meaghan Mahoney.
The Vuitton discussion thread has been viewed nearly 1 million times, with 70,000 messages posted. Vanard, a psychology student, sees her posts there as a public service.
"I feel that it's like a little community where we can all help each other out," she said. Moderators answer within minutes of most queries and often defer to others for second and third opinions. Any member is allowed to authenticate, but "if you're wrong on items, people will correct you," Vanard said.
Juan Mata, 21, a grocery store department manager, spends up to three hours each day helping to confirm authenticity for other members, but said sellers have other ways to sell their fakes.
"Many fall victims of the bait-and-switch scam, where the seller posts pictures of a real bag in the auction, then sends them a fake bag instead," explained Mata.
EBay said it removed 2.2 million listings of counterfeit items and suspended about 50,000 members in 2007 through its VeRO program, which reports listings of potential knockoffs to their respective designers.
Constance White, eBay's style director, recommends researching items, checking sellers' ratings before placing a bid, and asking sellers lots of questions.
"The best sellers are totally transparent," White said. "If they're unwilling to answer questions, it's a red flag."
Although she's confident in the collective expertise of The Purse Forum, Reyna doesn't buy her designer bags on auction sites anymore.
"I go to reputable retailers, like eLuxury, or the boutique itself," she said. "You know, that way I know it's real."
